Betting big on budget hotels

Of the seven children of the late industrialist Ramon del Rosario Sr., it was only his youngest, Jose Mari, who was able to stay with him when he was posted as ambassador to Canada, Germany and Japan.

The nine years spent helping his father dispense his official duties exposed the younger del Rosario to the very best that the glamorous yet highly competitive hotel world can offer, and he knew then that his career lay in the never-boring hospitality industry.

Thus while his elder brother, Ramon Jr., followed in their father’s footsteps and pursued a career in the corporate world, Jose Mari continued on to Valais, Switzerland to complete a diploma in hotel and restaurant management from Hotelconsult Schulhotels after graduating with a Commerce degree from De La Salle University.

There was no looking back since, and del Rosario was able to chart an impressive career in the hospitality industry. He started out as a front desk receptionist at the Hotel Lausanne Palace in Switzerland and worked his way up to food and beverage coordinator at The Manila Peninsula Hotel, management trainee at The Imperial Hotel in Japan and was eventually named the first Filipino general manager and chief operating officer of The Manila Hotel.

Microtel Baguio Opens Tapas Bar

MANILA, Philippines - Microtel Inns and Suites Baguio recently opened the Te Quiero Tapas Bar & Restaurant, the new ‘in’ place in the City of Pines. Te Quiero offers everything from Spanish tapas to local comfort food as well as an impressive selection of imported wines and spirits. It is located on Upper Session Road.

Baguio cooks up most wanted attraction in Te Quiero

MANILA, Philippines - Baguio City is blessed with a topography that includes zigzagging through the Cordillera Central mountain range amid pine trees and a cool climate. Indeed, Baguio is undoubtedly one of the must-go places in the Philippines.

Baguio is a city of contrasts and ironies, and its trove of treasures and relaxing character has attracted local and foreign tourists in search of a rejuvenating weekend sojourn. Food is a huge part of Baguio culture and food trips are often orchestrated by foodies in pursuit of gastronomic highs.

Impressive modern interiors, Spanish food, fabulous service and a dash of Baguio’s inimitable charm spell out the city’s newest most wanted attraction: Te Quiero Tapas Bar and Restaurant.

Located in Microtel Baguio, right beside the Victory Liner Passenger Center, Te Quiero is a Spanish tapas Bar and restaurant. The folks behind it hope to give the city’s food crowd a place to appreciate Spanish cuisine.

In Te Quiero, the owners teamed up with Microtel executive chef Melchor Lopez to come up with an array of Spanish cuisine sampler. Indulge in Te Quiero’s gambas al ajilo and baguerones en vinagre. Te Quiero combines Baguio techniques and Spanish sensibilities, transforming local elements like mushroom and goat meat into something exquisite. The result: Baguio mushroom soup and caldereta de cabra.

Te Quiero also offers a selection of Spanish cocktails, wines, beers, and other liquors.

JOSE MARI DEL ROSARIO Bringing Home the Microtel Dream

They say that one’s passion can be traced back to one’s childhood. This is very much the case for Jose Mari del Rosario, President and Chief Executive Officer of Microtel Inns & Suites (Pilipinas) Inc. and Microtel Development Corp.

His father, Ramon del Rosario Sr., was the first Filipino CEO of an American multinational firm in the 1940s and subsequently, Philippine ambassador to Canada, Japan, and Germany. Since Mari was youngest in a brood of seven kids, his father took him along on these diplomatic postings, an adventure that allowed him to see and experience many hotels around the globe. Apart from being a well-traveled lad, it could be said that Mari literally grew up in the hotel industry.

This rich exposure prompted the young Mari to dedicate his career to the hospitality industry. He graduated from one of Switzerland’s renowned hotel schools and later went to Cambridge, Massachusetts to get his master’s degree. Despite his academic achievements from international institutions, Mari told himself that experience would be the best teacher; off he went for a year-long management training program at the Peninsula Hotel Manila and another year at the iconic Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.

MANILA, Philippines - If experiencing thrills by land, water, and air does not convince you to choose Davao for your next destination, then we do not know what will.

Davao never seems to run out of surprises. Every time we make a visit, there is something new and exciting to be experienced. Our recent visit proves this point. We made the mistake of thinking that we were going to revisit some familiar attractions here. We guessed wrongly. We were brought to unexpected Davao destinations and experienced even more its charm and its people.

Home in Davao was Microtel Davao, a charming 51-room hotel located within the popular Damosa Gateway Complex, home of the city's favorite restaurants and bars. Microtel Davao has always earned our approval for its consistent display of quality, from its accommodations to its services.

Microtel Davao, like the city it is located in, is known for its fuss-free comfort, cleanliness, and security. We look forward to its American Chiropractic Association-approved healthy-for-the-back queen-sized beds every time we are there. Of course, it is the total Microtel experience that we find ourselves drifting toward to again and again.

"What Microtel Davao offers is also a peek into the greatness of Davao as a destination. Here we celebrate industry and leisure, business and social gatherings," says area general manager for Mindanao Rocky Jorolan. "Many guests tell us that Davao's charm is well represented in our hotel."

Jorolan told us, "Stay in Microtel, then go out and enjoy Davao's wonderful attractions." We followed his advice and never regretted one bit.

First on our itinerary was Camp Sabros in Kapatagan, Digos City, Davao del Sur. The camp was a good two hours' drive from Davao City. Along the way, we enjoyed quaint towns and lush greens. The road to Camp Sabros took us up a mountain, something which reminded us of Baguio, cool climate, abundant vegetation, and the like.

Microtel Davao's double room. Upon reaching Kapatagan, we headed straight to the Sitio Barras checkpoint, where another road led us to the camp. It was a good decision for us to walk up to Sabros, as it afforded us the chance to enjoy the local scenery, the rolling hills, the mountains, and the never-ending plantations. Despite this rather calming activity, the hike proved that land adventure, no matter in what form, has its rewards.

At Camp Sabros, we lost no time in trying out its ziplines. Both the 380- and 400-meter ziplines are fantastic ways to, well, pass the time (not more than a minute, actually). Zip through the air while suspended by a harness and cable. The views while we were ziplining were breathtaking, literally.

We learned that this is a favorite destination of Davaoeños and visitors. We're not surprised. The camp has everything, from picnic setups to cable lifts — further proof that Davao does not come up short in the pasyalan stakes.

The following day found us heading to the Davao River for its famous river rafting adventure. That meant over 12 kilometers of pure adrenalin rush as our group braved the rapids. Davao's river guides are very thorough with safety procedures and paddling techniques. We confess to feeling intimidated by the sight of rapids and rafts engaging one another in watery fisticuffs. The guides showed us that there was nothing to fear as we rowed and roared to our hearts' content. When we reached the end of the river, we understood why river rafting has become such an addicting adventure. How come we had not done this earlier in Davao?

Later than evening, we caught up with the Department of Tourism (Region XI) regional director Art Boncato Jr. at Damosa Gateway. Until our meeting, we never realized how advanced and active Davao is when it comes to playing host to its visitors.

Among the good news was the success of the "Visit Samal" months of March, April, and May. Samal is known as the "Island Garden City" with its magnificent beaches and resorts. Put together by the local government units and the private sector, "Visit Samal" roped in travelers to the island via innovative promotional passports.

There are inland tours being developed on the island, which is home of the Samal fruit bats. The bat colony flapped its way to the Guinness World Records as the world's largest bat colony.

"We just hosted the first Philippine Dive Seafari. We brought in local and international macro-photographers, whose task was to focus on small underwater creatures. We are pushing Samal already as a dive site to the international market," Boncato says.

He also reports that DOT Davao has launched its MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Events) Desk as their way to promote Davao as a convention destination.

‘Many guests tell us that Davao's charm is well represented in our hotel,' says Microtel area general manager for Mindanao Rocky Jorolan, shown with DOT-Region XI director Art Boncato Jr. "Part of that program is to give incentives to organizers who bring their conventions here. We are receiving private sector support to add to those incentives. It assists planners and organizers to succeed in their MICE programs in Davao. We help them prepare their bid books by supplying them with photos, videos, and data," he says. "We have the convention areas and facilities when business time comes. We also have the leisure activities and places for attendees' downtime."

DOT Davao is also actively promoting Mount Apo, the country's highest peak, as a nature destination. One event, the First International Mount Apo Boulder Face Challenge, was an endurance race that aimed to raise awareness on Mount Apo as a protected biodiversity site and ancestral domain.

Boncato is likewise excited about their food appreciation tours. There is the Tibolo Cultural Village which hosts breakfasts for visitors. He relates, "The highlight is their basket trade, weaving, and bamboo-cooked food. It's breakfast facing the foot of Mount Apo."

"We want to develop Davao as a culinary destination and promote local food. Our cuisine is distinct because of our island terrain. We have many fresh ingredients from the sea and the mountains. It helps that we rarely have typhoons in Davao, so we have an abundance of produce."

He likewise rattles off DOT Davao's thrilling offerings, from environmental to superior-quality tourism and security programs. All these, he informs us, aim to provide visitors with a safe and pleasant experience in Davao.

Truly spectacular news for everyone. We have long been convinced of Davao as an ideal destination. With bigger and brighter things to add to its already impressive offerings, we say Davao is just the tip of the iceberg. We wait in breathless anticipation.

Microtel Puerto Princesa featured in Balitang America

Weekend Escape to Puerto Princesa

A break from the city life is something this writer looks forward to at least once a month. It can be a day trip to Lucban for the Pahiyas festival or lunch in Tagaytay with a view of the volcano.

Sometimes a weekend getaway can do wonders especially if one has grown tired of seeing the same faces, the same desk and the same computer monitor day in and day out.

It was therefore a significant treat to go to Puerto Princesa in Palawan earlier this month. My companion and I had booked our plane tickets weeks in advance and as the departure date drew near, we pictured endless blue skies and crystal clear waters.

Imagine our surprise when we arrived at our beachfront hotel late one Friday afternoon to see the waters receding with the tide.

By the time we had eaten lunch and rested a bit, the roots of the mangrove trees near the shore were fully exposed and we could walk a hundred meters out with only our feet getting wet.

But we didn’t complain. We were only too glad to be at the beach where we spotted, among other oddities, an armada of ghostly crabs that marched and disappeared into the sand.

Since our only real itinerary was the day trip to the Underground River scheduled the following day, we lounged around in our beachfront room at Microtel, reading the papers, taking catnaps and watching trashy TV -- not necessarily in that order.

DINNER AT KA LUI

Like vampires, we arose at dusk and headed out to dinner at the highly recommended Ka Lui (369 Rizal Ave.).

I remember eating there during my first trip to Puerto Princesa over 10 years ago but back then it seemed smaller, more charming and less studied. Now, walk-ins are discouraged. It’s better to ask your hotel to call them at (048) 433-2580 to make reservations for the 6:30, 8:30 or 9:30 p.m. slots.

Our concierge managed to "squeeze" us into the second seating so to bide our time, we asked to be dropped off at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral that was originally built in 1872 before heading to Kamantian Native Handicrafts just off the main street, Rizal Ave., for trinkets and a range of cashew-based sweets.

Back at Ka Lui, we slipped off our footwear and deposited them in a cubbyhole. Only then we were led to our table.

Despite my earlier misgivings, the place is a feast for the senses. Kiping, those leaf-shaped rice wafers from Lucban tinted fuchsia, green, orange and yellow, were strung across windows and doorways.

Fresh fruits and flowers vied for the diners’ attentions as they shared space with dozens of paintings, many with a pastoral theme.

In the 10th edition of the Lonely Planet Philippines guidebook (May 2009), writer Michael Grosberg waxes poetic in his description of the restaurant: "Close your eyes and you might think you were in a lovely Balinese restaurant -- waiters in red sarongs glide barefoot across wooden floors, colorful paintings, sculptures and masks adorn the walls and there’s a general air of sophistication."

My companion and I shared that evening’s set meal for two that included an appetizer of fresh seaweed, fish prepared two ways (pan-fried and cooked in coco cream), three halved slipper lobsters and a vegetable dish ending with a fresh fruit salad. The bill for two including drinks was around P700.

Back at the resort, we propped ourselves on deck chairs and enjoyed the sea breeze and star-filled sky before calling it a night.

UNDERGROUND RIVER CRUISE

The following morning, after breakfast, our tour guide herded us into a van that would take us to Sabang, our jump-off point to the Underground River more formally known as the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.

The tour is handled by guides booked through the hotel and costs P1,500 per person. The price includes the necessary permits, land and boat transfers, and a buffet lunch by the beach.

Friends who had already made the trip warned of a really bumpy ride but again, we had no complaints. Except for a few unfinished portions, it was one smooth ride. Even the boat ride to get to the other side of the island was thankfully short and uneventful.

The mouth of the cave seems smaller than it does in pictures but the experience is one I won’t soon forget.

As the heat and sound of the afternoon is replaced by the damp cold and the sudden cries of swiftlets, you’re transported to a time when caves housed strange creatures.

Human beings have this tendency to search for the familiar in things they don’t understand. If they cannot or have to struggle to do so, they end up fearing and detesting these "unnamables."

I couldn’t help but think this as our guide flippantly pointed out horses and candles, the Holy Family and even an ear of corn and an eggplant.

I would have preferred someone more knowledgeable who could explain how the different stalactites and stalagmites were formed thousands of years ago or give a more detailed background on how this underground river was first discovered.

More importantly -- for me, at least -- I wanted to know how they even mustered the courage to plumb its cavernous depths?

If the people behind the campaign to include the Underground River in the list of "new" seven wonders of the world are serious about it, they should first train everyone involved in the tour since this spot is visited by locals and foreigners alike.

More than energizing me for another week at work, the weekend trip allowed me to see things with a fresh perspective.

So it is true: Travel opens one’s eyes.

Microtel Davao | Davao Highland Adventure

The Poor Traveler had always wanted to try Microtel. One of the reasons was that most of their branches were newly built and I just love how they position themselves in the market — budget hotels that won’t feel low-end. In fact, when I was planning a trip to Puerto Princesa, I seriously considered booking rooms with them. Unfortunately, they were fully-booked.

That’s why when I found out that we would be staying at Microtel Davao for our Extreme Adventure Tour, I was more than glad. After all, if their tagline is to be believed, it’s “the same great hotel everywhere you go.” But that’s for another story.

Anyway, we landed at Davao International Airport smoothly. When we emerged from the airport, two Microtel vans were already waiting for us. Since we were a party of 14, 2 vans were necessary. The ride was comfortable. It didn’t take long until we reached the hotel.

When we arrived, we approached the front desk and was given our key cards. (Call me shallow but cards are always a plus for me. Hihi. I love hotels that use cards instead of the actual keys.) We were assigned Room 127, good for two people. There were two queen-sized beds, an air-conditioning unit, a TV set, cable and a personal refrigerator. On the desk were some complimentary durian and mangosteen yema and candies. There were also a pitcher and glasses of water. Cool.

What I liked most about the room was that it was well-lit. Each light has its own switch so you can choose which parts of the room you’d want to light or keep in the dark.

The bathroom was also spacious and exceptionally clean. Four sets of bath towels and face towels were waiting for us. By the sink were single-serving toothpaste, shampoo and soap. And of course, there’s HOT WATER!!!

The staff was also very, very courteous and helpful. On my first night, I was feeling incredibly thirsty, I called for water and it was delivered in no time.

The conference room is also ideal for small business conferences. And I’m telling you, their glasses of water self-replenish. Well, not really, but because the crew just keep on filling it with water every time they spot them almost empty, it feels like it.

What I love most was its location. Although many travelers would hate the idea of it not being in the city center or downtown area, it is close to the airport. There are also so many restaurants around the area ranging from McDonalds and Tapsi (across the street), Yellow Cab (beside it) and the Swiss Deli (down the block). There’s also a convenience store nearby.

Part of the package were buffet breakfast for two days. The food was just alright but the service was exceptional.

Sagada by way of Microtel Baguio

By Lester Gopela Hallig

MANILA, Philippines - We have long dreamed of scratching Sagada off our bucket list of must-visits. So when we found out that Microtel Baguio was (still is, in fact) offering a Sagada package tour, we immediately said yes. This was our chance to fulfill that lifelong dream and it was unfolding right before our eyes. Maybe we should say, Sagada was rolling its welcoming road to us, a path that stretched and zigzagged for almost six hours.

It was, at least for this traveler, a relaxing trip, never mind the sometimes rocky road that jolted us out of our reverie. The calming vegetations, the brilliant morning sun and the reassuring blue sky were the perfect welcoming committee after having spent an evening at Microtel Baguio.

The hotel’s Sagada Tour includes three days and two nights’ stay, good for two persons, inclusive of breakfast and overnight stay at St. Joseph Rest House Sagada; private transportation (Baguio-Sagada-Baguio); and a local Department of Tourism-accredited tour guide. The package takes tourists to the famous burial caves, the Hanging Coffins, and Echo Valley.

We have always known Microtel to be a most trusted establishment, so we took the tour with confidence. As it turned out, Microtel did not disappoint. We appreciated that the transportation has been answered for. That meant traveling all the way to Sagada and back to Baguio in comfort.

The prize, really, was experiencing what others before us have written and raved about. Sagada is the perfect retreat when one wants peaceful and restful vacation. One can just sit back, read a book, and basically just take in the cool weather and the fresh air – with one’s mobile phone turned off, preferably.

Visiting and viewing the Hanging Coffins, the burial caves, and the Echo Valley are a good change of pace from our tired city life. We were able to breeze through all three as soon as well arrived. That meant having enough time to go on our own to the popular Sumaguing Cave, which had interconnecting caves deep inside. If spelunking is one’s thing, then this kind of adventure will definitely work. First-timers may very well have to seek a guide when exploring the cave, tricky paths, dark tunnels, and all.

This was also our opportunity to try the local food offerings. Freshly made yogurt is aplenty in Sagada, and so are the fruits and vegetables. There are American and European cuisines, too, in the menu of Sagada’s restaurants. Some of these eateries are owned by foreigners who have fallen in love so hard for Sagada that they decided to settle here for good. We could definitely see why.

Microtel Baguio resident manager Dean Cid told us why they came up with this tour package. “We always want to offer activities for our guests. With our Sagada tour package, we would like our guests to experience Baguio and its neighboring destinations,” Cid said.

For the Sagada tour, Microtel Baguio has tied up with West Travel & Tours, a local travel agency for logistics and transportation. Cid explained: “We want to be assured that our guests will be well taken care of. We ensured that the travel agency has a comprehensive insurance. So whatever unexpected thing happens, guests will be covered. Microtel has them covered but we also want our guests to be covered outside of Microtel premises.”

“Microtel Baguio will serve as the jump-off point to other memorable destinations. In fact, we have other tour packages should guests prefer to explore other options,” he added.

Cid was referring to the following good-for-two packages: Balatoc Mines Underground Tour, Countryside Tour, and City Tour. The former includes three days and two nights’ stay inclusive of breakfast; ride on the underground locomotive mine train in the famous Vegas Tunnel; and lessons on gold mining. Guests can even become a gold miner for a day, complete with miner’s gear.

The Countryside and City tours offer the same accommodations as the previous packages. The Countryside Tour takes visitors to the Kennon Zigzag View Point, the Philippine Military Academy, Easter Weaving School, Tam-awan Village, and La Trinidad Strawberry Farm. The City Tour brings guests to the mansion, Mines View Park, Camp John Hay, Ibay’s Silver Craft, Baguio Museum, Burnham Park, and the Lourdes Grotto.

“As you can see, it really is the total experience,” Cid said. “We even have a package where you can avail yourself of fares with Victory Liner, our partner. As you go around sightseeing, you have a place called home in Microtel Baguio.”

The hotel boasts of 60 comfortable, newly furnished rooms, each featuring Microtel’s trademark chiropractic healthy-for-the-back beds, cable television, and hot and cold shower, among others. We also cannot say enough how friendly and efficient the hotel staff is.

Microtel Baguio is right in the city and is a neighbor of the Victory Liner Passenger Center. The hotel has its own bridgeway that connects it to the bus terminal, thereby providing greater access and security for its guests.

We can now say that we have finally scratched Sagada off our list. However, it does not mean we will stop visiting it again. Of course, we will. Thanks to Microtel Baguio, the best of Mt. Province has become more accessible than ever.

Microtel Cabanatuan: Your oasis in Nueva Ecija

Dubbed as the country’s “rice granary,” Nueva Ecija yields important crops such as rice, corn and onion. Its lush greenery also contributes to the gallons of milk collected from cows and water buffaloes that last years, the province gained another title – the country’s “milk capital.” Agriculture students and scientists usually got o the province, the largest in the region, to go on farm tours.

But there is another reason now to visit Nueva Ecija. Tucked in cabanatuan, a first class city, is a sanctuary that offers relaxation away from the madness of a busy life.

Microtel Inn and Suites Cabanatuan gives travelers best value comfort and convenience. This is the place indeed if you want to be near all the activities (which surprisingly are not limited to farm tours but include a nearby golf course, malls and historical sites) yet be isolated and simply bask on a rustic setting, with the restful sound of nature for that much-needed R & R.

Access to this two-story refuge begins with a three-hour trip from Manila. If you live in nearby provinces such as Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Pangasinan and Zambalez, you will find it easy to visit and explore the place as the central bus terminal is within the vicinity.

At first sight, you will be mesmerized with the stark yet picture-perfect façade and surrounding greenery. There is no fence around, so you will surely feel free to explore beyond the pastures.

Upon entering the lobby, Microtel staffers greet guests with warm smiles, like family members opening their homes to friends and kin. There is no fancy chandelier or intimidating décor; instead, there are cozy sofas and wooden tables accented with artistic native pieces.

A unique wall décor weaves the entire look together. A 24-hour vending machine is in place as well as a water dispenser where free-flowing coffee is available. A big ice storage machine is also positioned near the stairs.

The comfortable ambience allows visitors to easily feel at home; children can run around without parents worrying about breaking glass accessories. The look is clean, subdued, fresh and inviting.

Microtel has 50 furnished rooms – 44 double rooms and six suite rooms, all equipped with an electronic keycard entry system. Safety is also guaranteed with the automated fire system.

There are rooms for the physically disabled, allowing them to move around easily. Adjoining rooms are also in place. This setting is great for families and friends who want easy access to each other while still maintaining their privacy. All rooms have chiropractor-approved mattresses, not too stiff but not too soft either; they are just comfortable.

Joel Cucueco, resident manager of Microtel Cabanatuan, says the beds are Microtel’s pride and joy. These beds are also found in other Microtel franchises around the world, truly living up to the tagline: “The same great hotel everywhere you go!”

The beds, queen-sized, not the usual double beds found in most hotels, are the ideal nest to sleep on. Topped with comfortable bed linens and three pillows per bed, every guest is bound to have a comfortable slumber with plenty of room to move around. Baby cribs can also be requested.
There are light fixtures in the recess above the bed with switches, so guests can effortlessly diffuse harsh lighting or create areas of light. The rooms are also equipped with an individually controlled air-conditioning unit, leaving the decision to turn up or lower the cooling to the guest.

There is also multi-function telephone system with IDD and NDD as well as radio clock. Guests can even catch the latest news on cable. Mixing business with pleasure is easy here with the convenience of Wi-Fi connection inside the guestrooms. Just ask the staffers on how to have internet access.

A long window seat is placed in each room, perfect for viewing the fields or simply for musing. The cabinet is large enough to fit clothes, shoes and other personal belongings. Drinking glasses and ice bucket are placed in a vanity table that also has a small chair.

The same simplicity and cleanliness are also felt in the toilet and shower, where hot and cold water is available. For the suites, there is a bathtub.

Microtel, Cucueco says, is a no-frills, limited-service hotel, so one will not see toiletries such as shampoos and shower caps. Cucueco reasons that hotel guests typically bring their own toiletries when checking in.

Each room, however, is provided with small soaps. What it lacks in toiletries, Microtel males up for lots of towels – from the bath size to the small ones.

Unlike the double rooms that have no refrigerator and microwave oven, the suites are outfitted with such amenities and others like coffee/tea making facilities, kitchen counter with sink, and sofa sleeper. The absence of refrigerator and microwave oven in the double room results in plenty of room for guests – more space for luggage and shopping bags.

Unwinding inside the guestrooms is already relaxing enough. But one can also spend an afternoon in the swimming pool at the back. Surrounded by trees, taking a dip amid the sky and the cool breeze is a moment to savor.

Companies going on seminars will benefit from the function room that can accommodate up to 100 people. Microtel currently has a “Stay and Learn” program where students are taught the basics of hotel management. High school and college students from Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Zambalez and Pangasinan have spent days and nights in Microtel learning the nitty-gritty of hotel operations.

Business services such as photocopy, fax and mailing facilitate a smooth run in trainings and seminars. An in property restaurant of Microtel Cabanatuan prepares delectable dishes that both trainees and guests can enjoy.

Journeying outside Microtel comes easy. When feeling adventurous, just hail a tricycle and start exploring Cabanatuan and its nearby districts. Or inform the Microtel staff for a shuttle to go to the main road or the bus terminals. Drop-off and pick-up services can also be arranged.

Microtel nets highest guest satisfaction rating in the US

Microtel Inns & Suites, an international chain of hotels under Wyndham Worldwide, bagged an unprecedented ninth straight highest overall guest satisfaction rating under the Economy/Budget hotels segment according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study released recently in the United States.

In its 14th year, the study measured overall hotel guest satisfaction across six hotel segments: luxury, upscale, mid-scale full service, mid-scale limited service, economy/budget and extended stay. A total of seven key measures are examined within each segment to determine overall satisfaction: reservations, check-in/check-out, guest room, food and beverage, hotel services, hotel facilities, and costs and fees.

“Microtel Philippines is certainly proud yet humbled to be part of this recent recognition. That’s because I assure you, that all Philippine Microtel hotels surpass the Microtel chain standards in the US. This achievement certainly strengthens the brand equity of Microtel in the world,” beams Jose Mari del Rosario, President and CEO of Microtel Philippines.

In the Philippines, Microtel Inns and Suites operate under the “limited service” segment rather than the “budget” segment in the US. Westlake Village, California-based J.D. Power and Associates is a global marketing information services company in key business sectors including market research, forecasting, performance improvement, training, Web intelligence and customer satisfaction. The company’s quality and satisfaction measurements are based on responses from millions of consumers annually.

Microtel, an international chain of hotels under the Wyndham Hotel Group, has more than 300 properties worldwide. In the Philippines, it has properties in key destinations such as Baguio, Batangas, Boracay, Cabanatuan, Cavite, Davao, Mall of Asia, Puerto Princesa, and Tarlac. The Best of Davao

When it comes to harmony and diversity, you only need to visit Davao to see and feel that it is truly for real. This point comes to the fore whenever the annual Kadayawan Festival is celebrated. The recently concluded Kadayawan brought together Davao’s distinguished tribes as well as visitors from all corners of the country and the globe.

Kadayawan originally owes its name from the Mandaya word “madayaw,” which is friendly, beautiful greeting. Through the years, it has evolved into a thanksgiving celebration. In 1988, former Davao City mayor (now Vice Mayor) Rodrigo Duerte renamed the event as “Kadayawan sa Dabaw” to celebrate Davao’s bountiful harvest of fruits, flowers, and other produce.

The festival also covers the diversity of the city’s rich cultures, from the tribal communities’ dance to Mindanawon fashion and floral arts.

Kadayawan 2010 featured a varied lineup of activities, from institutional events such as the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan street-dancing parade, the Pamulak floral float parade, and the agricultural trade where fruits and flowers were sold at bargain prices.

“What makes Kadayawan a big hit is because it is a melting pot of cultures. It shows that Filipinos from different tribes and provinces do live in peaceful coexistence in Davao,” said city tourism officer Bong Aportadera.

“Interestingly, this was the first time we were not having a festival theme,” Aportadera said. “Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte was right, theme or not theme we honor the tribes and celebrate the harvest. Even with the participating tribes or visiting contingents, we encourage them to show off their culture for everyone to see and appreciate.”

He also revealed that based on traffic, despite the 300-percent increase in motorist presence, the Duterte administration puts a lot of premium on the people’s security.

“We never plan an event without sitting down with our security experts. If they say everything is in place, then we proceed. Mayor Duterte herself is very particular down to the last detail, from cleanliness to security,” he said.

Outside of the festival itself, there is more to explore and do in Davao. One popular stop for any visitor is the Eden Nature Park, a mountain resort 3,000 feet above sea level where one can do mountain trekking, zip lining or nature tripping. There’s no going around Davao City without a trip to the Crocodile Park, where exotic to the Crocodile Park, where exotic reptiles, mammals, and birds are the main draw. Mind you, there are more places to see around the city.

It is also about time to know that Davao is a food tripper’s dream. Everything – from local cuisine to international fare – is all here. Of course, one should not skip trying out the fresh seafood (tuna, cooked in any method imaginable, comes to mind) and the roasts. We saw for ourselves how restaurants, offering these in their menus are teeming with diners happily going for seconds and even thirds. We got to try out Davao’s various restaurants, as well as the popular Jack’s Ridge, former wartime outpost that sits high above Davao and provides an unobstructed view of the city and the gulf.

All this traveling around Davao requires a home away from home, and no other place fits that bill than Microtel Davao, a 51-room hotel that belongs to the respected chain of limited services hotels.

During the course of the festival, Microtel was one with the spirit of Kadayawan. It was the only hotel in the city to offer its guests (and guests of guests) eat-all-you-can Davao fruits lanzones, rambutan, and mangosteen, and candies such as fruit-flavored yemas in its Minanawon-themed lobby.

“It’s our way of sharing the abundance of Davao,” said Microtel Davao resident manager Rocky Jorolan. “I am proud to say that Microtel Davao is a smaller-scale version of the city with its warm and hospitable staff who would go the extra mile for our guests – a truly Davaoeño trait that guests always rave about.”

There is also the name Microtel, already known far and wide for its consistently clean, comfortable, affordable, and secure accommodations. For guests looking for utmost comfort without the fuss, Microtel Davao is the go-to hotel.

“We are a mid-sized hotel with international-class accommodation. It is our style to ensure that everything is in place for our guests and the basics are in focus. Our delivery of services is the kind that is cordial and sincere. I am therefore happy to say that our consistently good reviews always cite the hospitality of the staff,” he said.

To complete the Microtel Davao experience, there are the amenities that the hotel is known for. There are American Chiropractic Association-approved, healthy-for-the-back queen-sized beds which assure guests of a good night’s rest. The bed itself has a plush-top mattress pad and fitted bed skirt, high-quality 200-thread count lines, top-of-the-line sheets and pillows.

Guestrooms are equipped with cable television, multifunction telephone system, and Internet-ready data port, among others. The suite rooms are added with a queen sofa sleeper, a coffee maker, microwave oven, kitchen counter with sink, and a bathtub.

Jorolan pointed out that Microtel Davao is also strategically located. “Microtel Davao is within the Damosa Gateway Complex, an area that merges business and entertainment. The hotel is surrounded by restaurants and bars, so guests have no trouble catching up on or sampling Davao’s best entertainment and culinary centers. Some of these establishments also deliver food to our hotel guests.”

Microtel Davao’s location is such that going around the city is never a problem. Since it is found in a popular commercial complex, Microtel’s guests have no trouble getting a ride. It is also near malls and churches, schools, retails shops, and other establishments. It’s all here, indeed.

“I consider ourselves a business hotel because a large segment of our market is corporate. However, we get a lot of guests who are here just for a vacation. Just like our own employees, we treat our guests as MFSB – mother, father, sister, brother,” he shared. “Ninety percent of our arriving guests are total strangers, but that does not stop us from treating them like family, like MFSB.”

“Our quality control is strict. I make sure that all our strengths as a hotel are weaved seamlessly to deliver a valued experience to our guests. It may feel like a smaller version of Davao, but our Microtel here is the same great service found around the world,” he declared.

This lean-and-mean hotel is increasingly becoming a byword among the events community. Microtel Davao’s function room, which can accommodate up to 200 attendees, had become the venue of some of the city’s most important business and social events. Microtel Davao also offers non-smoking rooms, and wireless internet access in the lobby, guest rooms, breakfast area, boardroom, and function room.

“This is what’s great about Davao. You have city living in a more laid-back, less stressful setting. Whether you’re here for leisure or business, you will feel it. While you’re at it, stay with us and find out why Davao’s charm is very much represented in our hotel,” Jorolan said.

Well, we have always encouraged fellow Filipinos to experience their country more by visiting local destinations. Visit Davao and discover why return trips to this city have become second nature.

Your new gateway to the North

The creation of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) a couple of years ago really opened up a lot of possibilities for millions of Luzon motorists. Not only did it make travel faster, it revealed a side of the country that most travelers usually just ignore in favor of quickly getting to their faraway destinations.

One of these welcome revelations can be found right at the Hacienda Luisita exit of SCTEX. Not just one, though, but two. The fist thing you’ll see is Microtel Tarlac, probably one of the best hotels you’ll encounter in the area, and the Aquino Center, a museum for two of Southeast Asia’s icons of democracy: the late Sen. Benigno “NInoy” Jr. and his wife, the late former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino.

If there’s one thing that can be said about encountering a Microtel hotel along the road, it’s that is really is the same great hotel anywhere you go. The chain’s knack for consistency is legendary, having the same great quality in accommodations, facilities, amenities and systems that you would find in any of their hotels across the country and in other countries.

Seeing how much of a prime spot the Microtel Tarlac site is, nicely positioned at the expressway exit leading into Mac Arthur Highway, no surprise that it gets quite a healthy number of returning guests. Once you ease yourself in the ample parking area, you’ll be able to choose from the hotel’s three different room variants – single, double and suites – across 50 of its available rooms include cable TV, air-conditioning, IDD-NDD phones, Internet ports, safety deposit box, hot and cold showers, and the famous chiropractor-approved mattresses which provide the maximum comfort to any weary traveler.

Guests opting for the suites get a little extra. A microwave over and refrigerator are available along with some coffee and tea-making facilities. The suites are big enough to have their own kitchen counter with sink as well as a sofa sleeper. Finally, you may also bathe in luxury in the bathtub.

Aside from the amenities, expect to get complimentary breakfast and if you’re traveling with children under 12 years old, they can stay for free in their parent’s room. Baby cribs are also available upon request. Business people who can’t get away from the office can make use of the room’s internet ports or the wireless internet at the lobby area. Photocopy, fax and main services are provided too.

There’s probably another reason why you’d like to drop by for a visit. Right beside the hotel is the Aquino Museum, home to the political and personal memorabilia of the late Aquino couple. Housed there include materials from Ninoy’s stint as mayor of Concepcion, Tarlac, his Senate election, detention under Martial Law, exile in the United States, and assassination at the old Manila International Airport. Of note is the display that contains his bloodstained clothes. Cory’s exhibit is much more sedate, with a chronicle of her political career from the 1986 snap elections to the end of her presidency in 1992. Also there are the various gifts she received during her presidency from foreign dignitaries as well as other personal effects.

Visiting the museum is timely, with Aug. 21 death anniversary of Ninoy. As bonus, guests at Microtel Tarlac can easily arrange tours to the museum with the hotel staff. Adults pay an entrance fee of P100, while kids go in for P50.

Not only is the Aquino Center a museum, it is also a high-end conference center and meeting venue. A ballroom can seat 180 to 300 people depending on the arrangements. Three seminar rooms are also available for small meetings. There are a chapel, audiovisual rooms and a tower room too.

If there is ever a perfect time to visit Microtel Tarlac, this would be a little slice of history and education for the traveler who has seen it all. What’s more, the Microtel chain recently won the award for “Best Guestroom Design” in limited service category during the Hotel World Expo and Conference in Las Vegas. It was also recognized by Lodging Hospitality Magazine with a Chain Leadership Award for Design and Décor. Wouldn’t you want to check out what the fuss is all about?

Microtel Puerto Princesa bags Cleanest and Greenest Hotel Award

Photo shows (from left) Oplan Linis Program Director, Ms. Elena Hagedorn; Microtel Puerto Princesa Resident Manager, Rene Suarez; City Councilor Marivic Javarez; Mayor Edward Hagedorn; Vice Mayor Lucilo Bayron

The city government of Puerto Princesa, Palawan recently held its 2010 Clean and Green Awards through its Oplan Linis Program headed by its Director Ms. Ma. Elena Hagedorn. The ceremony was held last March 3, 2010 at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum and Microtel Puerto Princesa was recognized as the Cleanest and Greenest Hotel among all the hotels in the city. The award was received by Microtel Puerto Princesa Resident Manager, Mr. Rene Suarez.

Puerto Princesa City’s Oplan Linis Program was launched last August 1, 1992 with the primary objective to rehabilitate and sustain cleanliness, beautification and sanitation in the city. In order to carry out these tasks, the city government has initiated partnership among government agencies, non-government organizations, private sectors and its citizens. Two years after, Puerto Princesa was formally declared as the Cleanest and Greenest city in the country. The noteworthy success of this program can be credited to the Palaweños themselves as they have accepted the challenge by personally collecting their accumulated garbage. This culture was then imbibed from children to adults heeding the call of the city as the cleanest and greenest in the country.

The program covers six major components: Cleanliness, Beautification, Sanitation, Sagip-Dagat (Save Sea), Sagip Hangin (Save Air), and Information and Education. Microtel Puerto Princesa has fulfilled these major components through its efforts in garbage segregation and energy conservation, as well as its tree planting activities and strict compliance with the local government unit’s environmental policies. Also incorporated in their future plans is the full operation of its sewage treatment plant.

Microtel is an international chain of hotels with 300+ properties located in US, Canada, Argentina, Honduras, Mexico and Philippines.
